ATLANTIS This exhibition came about as the result of an invitation by the Ministry of Culture of Catalonia to participate in the 1992 quincenteniel celebrations in Barcelona. Nissen chose the theme of Atlantis, as a fable linking both America and Europe. The exhibition starts with a section of invented maritime maps of Atlantis, and in the area in which they are displayed one hears the faint sounds of whale song. Other works include relief paintings evocations of sea beds; sub aquatic archeology, floating volcanoes and drifting pyramids. Wood and bronze sculptures of erupting pyramid/volcanoes propose an invented archeology signs and detritus of the lost continent. At a certain point in the exhibition one enters a darkened area - a conjectured Aquarium of Atlantis in which there are illuminated tanks containing transparent acrylic sculptures. |
